The Steps Involved When Replacing Pool Tile

The Steps Involved When Replacing Pool Tile

Maybe the pool was there when you bought the property and is in disrepair, or maybe the pool you bought is aging and in need of a face lift. No matter what your reasons, resurfacing your pool is a long process, but it can save you from needing to repair the underlay of your pool. Because of the materials required and the complicated nature of the process, it is recommended that you hire a professional pool repairman. However, that does not mean that you shouldn’t be aware of what goes on in the process of replacing pool tiles.

Whether you are replacing the entirety of the surface of your pool, or fixing one or two tiles near the edge, the steps remain the same.

  • Make sure that the water in your pool is lower than the tile or tiles you want to replace.
  • Chisel away the tile, the grout, and the glue to expose the concrete underneath; the surface is now ready to be cleaned.
  • Using muriatic acid and the proper safety equipment, such as a mouth cover and eye protectors, scrub the exposed concrete to kill any algae and remove any dirt that has built up.
  • After cleaning the exposed area, use soda ash to counteract and neutralize the muriatic acid.
  • Finally, add another layer of concrete and insert the new tiles.
  • Once the tiles are in place you must keep the new concrete moist so that the concrete can cure properly.

While it is possible to obtain the materials and complete this job alone, it is a complicated and involved process that should be left to a professional with the proper training and know-how.

Either way, when done properly, replacing the tiles of your pool can reinvigorate the look of your pool as well as extend the it’s life, while avoiding more costly and time-consuming options such as reworking the underlay of your pool.
