Remodeling A Pool Takes Time And Effort, But It Pays In The End

After years of exposure to weather and chemicals, a pool can be a candidate for a complete rejuvenation and remodeling.

However, for those who want to give it a try on their own, here’s a brief how-to:

• Supplies – You’ll need a chisel, hammer, rubber gloves, face mask, bucket, muriatic acid, hose with misting attachment, scrub brush, pool brush, soda ash, white Portland cement, white sand, acrylic bonding agent, and a pool trowel.

• Acid Wash – Start with an acid wash to remove algae. First, chip away at the plaster with a chisel and hammer. Then, with a hose readily available in the pool, pour muriatic acid down the sides in 10-foot increments. Scrub and rinse with the hose. Then, while still wearing a facemask and gloves, add soda ash to the puddle at the bottom of the pool, mix it with a long pool brush, and pump the water to a safe area.

• Remodeling – Mix the cement with the sand and water and apply it to the sides of the pool with a trowel. Keep misting it with water to keep it from drying out as you work around the pool. Fill the pool with water when finished to avoid drying and cracking.
